Artist Statement

My creative process is guided by a series of questions: 1) What does my body want to do? 2) How does my body feel when I’m moving? and 3) How does my movement make others feel?

As humans we are meaning-making machines. We do whatever we can to make sense of the world we live in, and when confronted with an abstract art form (perhaps modern dance?), we are conditioned to ask “What was that about?” As a dancer and choreographer, I have little interest in the aboutness of a dance, nor do I make work that relies on concrete narrative to tell a story.

Instead, I am much more interested in the actual exchange of movement, and I’m fascinated in the dynamic relationship between the performer and the audience. Within this exchange, I believe there is opportunity to create time and space for us to explore our human desire to connect with one another by creating shared, felt experiences. To me, making dances is an experiment in which I invite others to join me in a world that lies somewhere in between reality and imagination, to experience my movement and take whatever may resonate with them.

I believe in the human potential to move and be moved, to see and be seen, to feel and be felt. Dance allows us to manifest this potential. My goal as an artist is to share my perspective on what it means to be human, striving to create work that lingers and impacts the way people feel, think, and move.
